Your mentor
Kenneth Lawrence
Award-winning filmmaker and wildlife photographer whose work focuses on capturing wildlife behaviour, natural landscapes and conservation stories through photography and filmmaking.
His film Wild Spiti — The Ghost of the Snow, on the elusive Snow Leopard of the Himalayas, won the Best Film Award at Nature's Best Photography Asia 2020. Kenneth leads wildlife photography and filmmaking experiences across India and abroad — Pangot, the Amur Falcon areas, Mangalajodi, Corbett, Little Rann of Kutch, Borneo, Bharatpur and Tal Chhapar.

The workshop was excellent. Kenneth has clearly put his heart and soul into designing it, and it showed in every session. What I appreciated most was that he started from the absolute basics, making it valuable regardless of your experience level. I attended with just one goal in mind: to learn how to craft a compelling narrative. Instead, I came away with so much more — from understanding cameras, lighting and composition to learning how to tell meaningful stories, every session was insightful and engaging. The lodge accommodation was decent. The unexpected rain meant a few things were beyond anyone's control, but the lodge staff went above and beyond to ensure everyone had a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Overall, a fantastic experience, and I look forward to attending many more workshops in the future.

Every session has a purpose: field time when the light is right, craft sessions when it is not, and a review table at the end of each day.
Arrival, recce & the language of wildlife film
- Check-in at the Pangot forest lodge, gear check and camera setup for video
- Session: how a wildlife sequence is actually built — shot sizes, beats, story arc
- Evening recce of the ridge and water holes we will film at
Field craft: light, hides and behaviour
- Dawn shoot at the water hole — filming birds and behaviour in low light
- Exposure, frame rates, shutter and picture profiles for the forest
- Reading behaviour so you anticipate the action instead of chasing it
- Night session: log footage review with Kenneth, frame by frame
Cinematography, sound & storytelling
- Long lens work, gimbal and tripod technique, follow focus on moving subjects
- Recording natural sound and ambience that makes a sequence believable
- Shooting cutaways, macro details and landscape for a complete sequence
- Building your own 60-second story from the field
Edit, feedback & the road ahead
- Assembly edit workshop: selects, pacing, sound design basics

The location
Pangot — 2,000 m of oak, pine and birdsong
A quiet Kumaon hamlet above Nainital, on the edge of the Cheena Peak range. More than 250 bird species, forest water holes that pull in activity all day, and mist that rolls through the frame like it was directed.
It is one of the few places in India where a beginner can film serious wildlife without a week of driving. We stay right inside the forest belt, so the field is a two-minute walk from breakfast.
